UNIVERSITY OF MAINE AT FARMINGTON COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, HEALTH AND REHABILITATION
LESSON PLAN FORMAT Teacher’s Name: BethanyDate of Lesson: 3 Grade Level: 9thTopic: Diet and Exercise Objectives Student will understand that nutrition is directly linked to our personal health. Student will know that everyone is different and have different diets and will be able to help themselves and friends who need to improve their diet and exercise. Student will be able to design a lifestyle that is considered healthy. Maine Learning Results Alignment Maine Learning Results: Health Education & Physical Health Education -A. Health Concepts A6. Basic Health Concepts Grades 9-Diploma Students analyze complex health concepts related to family life, nutrition, personal health, safety & injury prevention; and tobacco, alcohol, & other drug use prevention. Rationale: This lesson meets the MLR by having students analyzing different lifestyles and thinking about ways to improve someone’s personal health by improving their diet and physical activity. Assessment Formative (Assessment for Learning) *Students will be asked to chose a celebrity which they feel needs to improve their diet, exercise and overall health and create a wikispace with ideas on how that celebrity can improve their health. Students will be broken up into pairs and will be asked to do research, find links, videos and pictures to put on their wikispace. Through this lesson students will show evidence of the knowledge that they have learned regarding nutrition, fitness and overall health. This will allow students to apply what they have already learned about being healthy and apply it to someone else's life. Students will have several classes to work on their wikispaces as well as outside of class and when students have completed their wikispace they will be presenting them to the class. The students will be asked to share with the class why they chose their celebrity and the different ways they feel they could help improve that celebrity’s life. Summative (Assessment of Learning) *Students will be assessed on several different things. They will first be assessed on how they worked with their partner. Each member of the group will be expected to do the same amount of work. I will be able to assess this by having students assess their partners for me to view. Each individual will receive an individualized grade and then the pair as a whole will receive a grade as well based on their wikispace and the given rubric. This lesson addresses my MRL requirements because it teaches students about nutrition and exercise and asks them to apply it to real life. Integration Listening & Speaking: students will be presenting their wikispaces to the class and be expected to listen and absorb the information being presented on their wikispace. Students will also be speaking during their presentation and will be asked to speak clearly so that everyone can hear and understand them. Writing: Students will be given the opportunity to write on their wikispace. Technology: I will be viewing an online video clip of different health promotional videos which have been made appealing to the audience. These videos will help to show students some examples of how the media tries to appeal to its audience and then lead into a discussion about the pressure which the media puts on people. Students will also be creating their own wikispace page which will have information on how they can improve the celebrity of their choice’s diet, exercise and overall health. Groupings Students will be asked to work with their summer seasonal partner pairs for this assignment. Each student is expected to participate in the writing of the wikispace and research equally. I will be asking the students to assess their partner in order to give me feedback on how the pair worked together and allow me to know whether or not everyone did participate. Each member will be receiving a participation grade and the whole group will be receiving a grade as well. Differentiated Instruction Strategies Interpersonal: Students will be given the opportunity to meet with their partner and work with their peers when they are creating their wikispace Musical: Students will be creating a wikispace and may add any sound and musical features that they would like; I will also play an iPod in the background while students are working on their wikispaces. Bodily-Kinesthetic: This will be met when students are asked to grab laptops and asked to move to sit next to their partner. Linguistic: Students will be writing information on their wikispace which gives students who are strong writers an opportunity to show their talent. Naturalist: Students will be asked to think about exercises they can do outside that are fun and can improve their health as well. Logical-Mathematical: Students will be asked to reflect on what their given celebrity is doing wrong when it comes to their diet and exercise and asked to logically think about how they can improve that person’s lifestyle. Modifications/Accommodations I will review student's IEP's, 504s and ELLIDEPs and make appropriate modifications and accommodations. For students that are unable to complete the assignment because of personal reasons I will provide them with an alternative assignment. Students who are absent during the introduction of the project will be expected to see me so I can go over the discussion which was had in class. I will also talk about the wikispace which students have been asked to create and allow that student to join an already existing pair or to create a wikispace on their own. That student will then be expected to meet with their group to see what they can do to help during the project and see if they missed anything that their group had already done. If students are placed in pairs where they do not get along with other members and feel that it will jeopardize their grade, I will make the appropriate changes so that each student feels as though they can participate with their group. Extensions *I will utilize a few online health promotional video clips to show the class. (Type II) These videos will show students some examples of how the media and advertising is meant to appeal to people and lead to a discussion on the pressures of Hollywood. I will also ask students to create a wikispace for their chosen celebrity with information on how they could help to improve their celebrity’s lifestyle. This will act as a Type I and Type II technology which will have students doing research and developing problem solving skills. Materials, Resources and Technology Rubrics

Rationale: This lesson meets the Maine Standards for Initial teacher certification by taking into a consideration that students learn in different ways and providing them with different learning opportunities. Students are asked to be creative and present the information in ways of their choice, they are asked to be organized and follow the given rubric while creating their project, they are asked to explore why it is important to be healthy and analyze different ways to incorporate exercise into one's diet. Students are also provided with a safe and comfortable learning environment. Any mistreatment or disrespectful attitudes will not be tolerated in the classroom. •Standard 4 - Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals, and learning and development theory. Rationale: This lesson meets the Maine Standards for Initial teacher certification by providing students with the proper information they need to complete this project. Students have been learning about nutrition and exercise in the previous two lessons and are now being asked to use their knowledge on this subject matter and apply it to someone else's life. This allows students to take empathy for those people who struggle with obesity and malnutrition and gain some self-knowledge on how they can improve their own life. •Standard 5 - Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technology to meet students’ needs. Rationale: This lesson meets the Maine Standards for Initial teacher certification by meeting the needs of six different learning strategies. These six strategies include interpersonal, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, naturalist and logical. This lesson also uses different type II technologies to meet the needs of all the different types of learners in the class. Students are given the opportunity to create a wikispace and to do research on the computer. •Standard 8 - Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner. Rationale: This lesson meets the Maine Standards for Initial teacher certification by assessing students in many different ways. First students will be assessed by how they work with their partner and whether or not they participated. Each group member is expected to participate equally and this will be proven to me through peer evaluations filled out by each students. Students will also be evaluated as a group on their wikispace. Students will be given a rubric and grades will be based on how well groups followed the rubric. Teaching and Learning Sequence: Class Agenda: Greet Students Put students in pairs Hook Quick discussion on Hollywood diets and pressure from the media Handout USDA pyramid sheet & review it Go over wikispaces with students Assist Students Give students the remainder to work with partner When students come to class the desks will be arranged into pairs. Before the students sit down in their seats I will ask them to get with their summer seasonal partner. Through this lesson students will understand that nutrition is directly linked to our personal health. I will show students a few short clips of health promotional advertisements. After I show students these clips I will lead them into a discussion on health and the media. I will ask students to share their input on why the media tries to create funny/appealing health videos as a way to get people to use their product. I will also talk to students about the pressure which the media puts on us to look “good”. Each pair will then be asked to pick a celebrity, athlete, etc. who they feel needs to change their diet/exercise and other lifestyle habits and think of different ways how they feel they could help to improve that celebrities lifestyle. Students must approve their celebrity with me before beginning research. Each pair will be using the information they found to create a wikispace which has information on their celebrity, why they need to improve their lifestyle and how they should improve their lifestyle. Students will be asked to use the USDA pyramid as a reference to use when thinking about how their celebrity can become healthier. Each pair will also be asked to address the pressure that the media puts on people. Students will be able to see that they can help to improve their own diet as well as their friends, family and anyone else who need to improve their diet and exercise. I will then explain to students that the goal of their wikispace is to help the celebrity of their choice to become healthier. What, Where, Why, Hook, Tailor: Bodily-Kinesthetic, Interpersonal and Visual. I will then hand out each student a copy of the USDA food pyramid. I will briefly go over the pyramid and students will use what they already know to learn about the importance of the USDA pyramid when thinking about how they can improve their celebrity’s life. Once each student has a copy of the food pyramid I ask students to think about who they want to create a wikispace for and then approve their choice with me. Each group will be asked to design a wikispace for their chosen celebrity and with the research they did create a wikispace with different tips and ideas on how their celebrity can become healthier. This will include different meals, snacks and physical activities. Students will be given time to talk with their partner and brain storm ideas about how they will design their wikispace. Students will also use this time to do research on laptops to find healthy meals and exercise tips that they may use to put on their wikispace as well. Equip, Explore, Tailor: Linguistic, Visual, and Logical. Through this lesson students will be able to take the information they are given about a person’s diet, exercise and lifestyle habits and make the proper modifications in order to improve that person’s way of living. They will also be able to make the proper modifications to do that for themselves as well. When students are put into pairs I will make it clear to them that each student will be receiving a participation grade for teamwork. I will also tell them that their partner will be assessing how much they participated as well. This will make it clear to the class that each student is expected to do the same amount of work. This lesson will give students the opportunity to see that the USDA pyramid is meant to be used as a guide for people to eat the right amount of servings in the different food groups and people who suffer from obesity and malnutrition need to evaluate their diet. When students have had most of the class time to create their wikispace I will ask the class to come back together as a whole so each group can share who their wikispace is about and how they plan on helping them. Students can also share ideas to other groups at this time as well. Students will be presenting their final wikispace at a later date. This lesson will prepare students for the next lesson where they will actually be creating a diet/exercise plan for a client. Explore, Experience, Rethink, Revise, and Tailor: Verbal, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Bodily-kinesthetic, Musical, and Logical. Students will be doing self-assessments on their partner. They will be asked to fill out a sheet at the end of the assignment and pass it into me. This sheet will provide me with feedback on how the pair worked together and whether or not each partner equally participated. I will explain to students that their evaluations will not been seen by anyone else but me and I will be basing their participation grade by these evaluations and also by what I see when students are working during class. I will also provide feedback to my students by going around during class and helping them to find good research and answer any questions they may have about their wikispace. Students will also be given the opportunity if they would like to of their wikispace so that I can edit it. Each group will also be receiving a grade as a whole based on the rubric which will be provided to the class. When each group’s wikispace is presented to the class I will base their grade on that rubric. If a group does not receive the grade which they desired I will give them the opportunity to revise their script wikispace to add in information and make up for some lost points. This lesson is meant to use what students have learned in previous classes on nutrition and have them apply it to their lives as well as to other peoples. Evaluate
